Discovery Japanese Language Program

Level Description Goal
MJP 101 (Intro) As a start into learning Japanese, you will learn to use basic everyday phrases and short conversations on such topics as self-introduction, favorite foods, etc. You will also learn to read words in hiragana. give greetings and use basic daily phrases
– talk about where you are from, what you do, what food you like, etc. using basic phrases
– read hiragana words
MJP 102 (Basic) Learn useful expressions and basic phrases in everyday contexts such as talking about hobbies, events, holidays, shopping, transportation, etc. Basic kanji words related to the topics as well as relevant grammar and vocabulary will be introduced and practiced. This level is as high as able to take N5 in JLPT. read short, simple phrases and sentences
– write short, simple phrases and sentences about your hobbies, weekend activities, etc.
– recognize approximately 30 basic kanji words such as simple verbs and adjectives
MJP 201 (Intermediate + N4 Prep) Intermediate level is to target developing skills to interact in everyday and common situations encountered at work and leisure. Topics include describing how people look, explaining the way to eat a certain dish, asking for travel advice, preparing an event, talking about vacation experiences, etc. Approximately 80 kanji words related to the topics as well as relevant grammar and vocabulary will be introduced and practiced. Japanese culture will be an important thread throughout the course. interact on such topics as how people look, celebrating someone’s birthday, travel advice, etc.
– read short, simple texts such as emails, seasonal greeting cards, etc
– read approximately 80 kanji words related to the topics
– be able to achieve N4 in JLPT
MJP 202 (High-Intermediate + N3 Prep) This level is designed to develop conversational skills and grammatical accuracy. Topics include a friend’s wedding, stress in daily life, job hunting, and problematic situations during a travel. Authentic materials such as video clips and comments on websites will be used along with regular learning materials. Approximately 250 kanji related to the topics as well as relevant vocabulary and expressions will be introduced and practiced. – interact on such topics as a friend’s wedding, stress in daily life, job hunting, and problematic situations during a travel, etc..
– give a speech from note on such topics as your experience in a trip, the company you are working for, etc.
– read approximately 250kanji words related to the topics
-be able to achieve N3 in JLPT
MJP301 (Advanced + N2 Prep) Reading and discussion is designed to develop skills to identify the writer’s viewpoints and cultural background while enjoying reading essays concerning cross-cultural events experienced by non-Japanese people living in Japan. You will also practice expressing your ideas and opinions about topics related to the essays. read and understand a variety of essays concerning cross-cultural experiences in which the writers adopt particular viewpoints
– express your opinion in a discussion with friends/colleagues by providing somewhat detailed explanations and reasons
-be able to achieve N2 in JLPT
